UNILAG RESEARCHER, ARAMIDE OSHINGBOYE, 14 OTHERS RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

A Ph.D student of Plant Molecular Biology at the University of Lagos, Aramide Dolapo Oshingboye,.along with 14 others from different countries has.received the 2014 UNESCO-L’Oreal International
Fellowship.

Fifteen 2014 UNESCO-L’Oreal International Fellowships were granted to young women whose promising research projects have a potential impact
on human well-being and the environment.

The recipients of Fellowship in 2014 carry out their research in various fields within the life sciences, such as neurobiology, genetics, ecology and biotechnology.

These passionate young scientists are
often motivated by matters touching on local public health or biodiversity protection.
Mrs. Aramide Oshingboye who is currently doing her doctoral degree at the Molecular Systematics Laboratory in the Department of Botany of the
University of Lagos, would soon depart to the Centre for Plant Diversity and Systematics, University of Reading, United Kingdom.

She is focusing her Ph.D research project on a particular plant family, the Fabaceae family, whose biodiversity-the existence of a healthy array of species and subspecies with a large and varied gene
pool- is vital to the ecosystem of the arid zones of northern Nigeria which is a fragile paradise.

The young scientist has discovered that the ability of these leguminous plants to fix nitrogen in the soil helps maintain its fertility and prevent erosion while,
as well, cultivated varieties such as chickpeas, soyabeans and lentils are essential to food supplies.

The combined threat of global warming and unsustainable farming practices are however, threatening the genetic diversity of the Fabaceae family.

Much of Aramide Oshingboye’s research will involve the use of new DNA barcoding technique for identifying plants in order to create a genetic map of the relationships between the different species. In
contributing to a greater understanding of the biodiversity of Fabaceae family and of the region itself, her work will enable more effective conservation efforts in the face of global climate change and eco-
friendly farming methods both in her home country and throughout the world.

Dangote does not sleep, So Why should I’, I am the black sheep in my family, Olamide Open up.

Nigerian Rapper Olamide recently had an interactive session with pressmen at his office in Parkview Estate, Ikoyi to address controversial issues, his career, boo and lots more

Olamide known for his indigenous rap style, disclosed that he is the black sheep in his family adding that he doesn’t have a good relationship with his parents.

“My mom and dad… I’ve never been that close to them.
I don’t stay at home often; I am just that
stupid boy, more of a black sheep.
I can’t lie about it but the blood and love is strong. We love each other so much and we still keep in touch but my brother
and my sister are closer to my parent.

I am the middle child — between my sister and my brother.”
On his academics “I dropped out of school for music but I intend going back. I will be doing a professional course in South Africa to study Music Business and
I’m certain about it Hopefully in 2015.

Clearing the air on his alleged beef with singer Wande Coal, he said “We never had any beef. We spoke on phone three days ago. When I heard the gist, I was
also surprised. He is my guy, he is a street boy like me.

Why I said they want to Wande Coal me, they want to Davido me on my song is that people are just out looking for who to use for a scapegoat, trying to bring you down, that was all I was trying to say.
I don’t have issues with them.”

He further cleared the air on the controversy he once had with media personality Tony Payne, “Tony Payne
is my mother, my angel. ID Cabasa is also my angel.

They both helped me to get where I am today in my music career.
If not for them, there will be no Olamide. Even if I once had a problem with Tony
Payne, mistakes are meant to happen; nobody is perfect. She got a wrong piece of information about me. Wagging tongues told her stuff about me that
were untrue and she took it and got vexed.
But she didn’t take it to the heart, she’s still got it cool with me.

When asked to address his relationship with D’banj, the ‘Durosoke’ crooner said “D’banj is just my big brother.
He calls me to advise me, he hides nothing from me, tells me about the industry, and he respects me for my hard work and puts me through business wise.

We were just planning to do business; people hear things and get it twisted. Baba and I are still doing business low key and we have a lot of surprises coming very soon. ”

On marriage and female fans “My female fans, I treat them like my girlfriend. My girlfriend knows I show them love, but I keep it low key. I don’t go too far. I
don’t want to take anybody for granted. I don’t want it to seem like God gave me private part so I should be getting laid with every lady. I appreciate my fans, I
show them love.
God will decide when we'll get married”.

He concluded by stating that he rarely has time to sleep “I’m just chasing my dream, because based on my research, it seems Aliko Dangote doesn’t sleep,
Obama doesn’t sleep, Bill Gate, the richest man in the world, still needs more, so I need no sleep either.”

Apple Set To Launch Android Version of iTunes.

According to reports, residents of Ibadan rushed to catch a glimpse of the suspected human eater.

The suspect was, however, whisked away by armed policemen to avert jungle justice.
Also, another man was mobbed by angry crowd after a price list of human parts was allegedly found on him.

This came as a man, who was about being dispossessed of the large sum of money he withdrew from a commercial bank at Mokola area of the city jumped down from a flyover with his money.

Vanguard gathered that the suspect caught with human tongues was arrested at Oni and Son Memorial Hospital area of Ring Road.

A source said that over 400 posters of a politician contesting the 2015 governorship election, women underwear and some weapons were found on him.

The source said he was rounded up by the policemen from Oluyole Police Station.

D’Banj in his recent interview with the popular UK OAP Tim West wood revealed that he had not met the woman he could die for.

55 Killed As Tiv Youths And Fulani Herdsmen Clash In Benue.

It was a bloody day March 23 in Benue state as some youths of the Tiv tribe
clashed with suspected Fulani mercenaries in the state, leaving 55 people dead.

The communal clash which is reported to be about land matters happened at Gbajimba, the headquarters of Guma LGA of the state.

Sources say suspected Fulani mercenaries had attempted to attack the Tiv community in the morning at about 10am but were resisted by the youths.

They then made a return after a well coordinated attack plan had been hatched.

They came in their hundreds, shooting
indiscriminately and burning down houses.

“They came in their numbers very early in the morning from Awe, Nasarawa State and made an attempt to seize the town and the local government secretariat but they were confronted by our youths who resisted them, forcing them to beat a retreat.

Later in the afternoon at about 1pm, they staged a more coordinated attack on the town, this time they came in their hundreds, shooting, burning down houses, huts and killing anything in sight.

The Police station in Gbajimba was helpless because we have less
than 50 officers and men on ground at the station and this attack has completely
overwhelmed them”. A witness said
Benue State Deputy Governor Steven Lawani while speaking at a thanksgiving service yesterday at the state capital, Makurdi, pledged that residents would reclaim their land being occupied by Fulani herdsmen.

69 Young Men & Women Arrested Over Prostitution & Other Immoral Acts In Kano.

The Kano State Hisba Board has arrested 69 young men and women for allegedly engaging in prostitution and other immoral acts in Kano metropolis.

The Director-General of the board, Dr Abba Sufi, told newsmen in Kano on Monday that the suspects were apprehended between Sunday night and early hours of Monday.

He said those arrested included 60 females and nine males, adding that they were apprehended in three houses along Abedi St.in Sabon Gari area of Kano.

“The suspects were arrested in Niyagara, Gidan Coci and Maman Aburi houses, all in Sabon Gari area after a raid by members of the board.

“Some of the women were arrested and
prosecuted four times even before the recent arrest, while some of them were found drunk and naked during the time of the arrest,” he said.

He said the board would continue to raid their hideouts with a view to sanitizing the places.

Sufi also said as soon as investigations were completed, the suspects would be charged to court for proper prosecution.

On beggars, the director general said the board had so far repatriated about 300 beggars to their respective states since the commencement of the exercise last week.

‘’We have so far returned about 300 beggars to their states of origin since we started the exercise last week and it will continue until the situation improves,’’ he added.

Shocking: Man Impregnates Elder Sister In Ajegunle.

A 24-year-old man has impregnated his elder sister, 25, in Ajegunle area of Lagos State.

LEADERSHIP learnt that their father popularly known as Papa Akpan is a steward in Ikoyi area while his wife, Mama Akpan is a staff of a private company in Apapa where she works as
a cleaner.

Sources said the parents usually leave their children, Akpan and Ime alone in their one-room apartment when going to work and the siblings are said to be fond of each other but nobody suspected an amorous relationship between them.

LEADERSHIP gathered that when their mother suspected that Ime was pregnant, she asked her but she denied one month later, it became obvious that Ime was pregnant and the woman had to tell her husband about the situation.

Last Friday, at about 4am, Papa Akpan was said to have woken Ime, her mother and Akpan up to discuss the issue and had pulled out a machete and threatened to cut Ime down if she failed to say who was responsible for her pregnancy.

A neighbour said as the atmosphere in the room became charged, Akpan ran out and it was at this point that Ime who was by this time.weeping profusely, told her parents that her younger brother was responsible for the pregnancy.

No FG directive to return applicants’ money – Immigration Service.

The Nigerian Immigration Service collected N1,000 application fee from almost 700,000 applicants who participated in the recently disastrous employment test that claimed more than 15 lives. There were reports recently that the federal government had directed the NIS to refund the money but according
to new reports, no such directive has been given by the government despite the fact that the recruitment exercise was cancelled.

The Public Relations Officer of the NIS and a rep of the Minister of Interior said that they are yet to receive any directive to refund the money.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have called on the Federal Government to refund the money to the applicants.

They should return it. It’s the decent thing to do.

WILL YOU EAT HERE? An Indian restaurant owner claims business has flourished since opening his eatery at the site of an old cemetery.

Rather than ripping out the graves to make way for his restaurant, owner Krishnan Kutti even chose to preserve the coffins and place tables around them at
the ironically-named New Lucky Restaurant in Ahmadabad.

The coffins are the remnants of a Muslim cemetery and the cafe has now become a popular hang-out for both young and old.

Kutti said: 'The graveyard brings good luck. Our business has been flourishing because of these graves.
It gives people a unique experience.
'We have maintained the graves as they were. Our customers don't seem to mind.'
Around a dozen graves lay inside the restaurant and have been sealed off by iron grills.

Nollywood producer and director Charles Novia who recently wrote about how the Nigerian youth need to focus on the agriculture system when he wrote about
the tragic Nigeria Immigration service recruitment stampede, reveals it is a step in the right direction.

Novia says he has always been an advocate for a paradigm shift in the areas of job creation, most importantly agriculture.

He concluded by stating “D’banj is selling a brand and spreading a message.
He is asking your young people to think out of the box.
To see the Koko Garri initiative as a laughable project means those narrow
minded people are as dense as the Kukuruku Forests in the Savannah.

1-Yr-Old Baby Gets Alcohol Poisoning After 17-Yr-Old Mother Gives Her 6 Shots Of Vodka.

How can you give a 1-year-old child alcohol.
Not even once, but 6 times.
According to ABC News Houston:
A mother and her sister are facing charges after a one-year-old child allegedly drank six shots of vodka. Shadreon Sade Jefferson, 17, and
Shamara Batiste, 24, are each charged with endangering a child. Authorities say on February 8, emergency personnel were
dispatched to a home in the 7200 block of TC Jester after a one-year-old girl became unresponsive.

When they arrived, the baby girl was moaning and had vomited. Emergency personnel then noticed the child was swaying and smelled of alcohol.

When the child was taken to the
hospital, doctors determined the child had suffered alcohol poisoning.

The child’s father told authorities his daughter had been in the care of her mother and aunt, and she was dropped off at his home in that condition.

Court documents state that when deputies interviewed the mother, she said she’d fallen asleep and when she woke up, Batiste told her she’d given the infant alcohol.

According to court documents, Batiste admitted the baby drank about six shots of vodka.

Timi Dakolo says he is not likely to forget in a hurry his experience with poverty when he started his career.

He could remember how he almost ran mad the first time he got N100, 000.
He said that he could hardly sleep that night.

“I couldn’t wait till the morning to rush to the bank and deposit it before it disappeared.
I thought something would happen to me or even the money.
Growing up was not easy; it was an
experience and a preparatory phase of my life.
It taught me to work hard. I believe more in hard work than in talent.”

Dakolo said, “I grew up with my grandmother; you can imagine what it is like growing with an old woman who was a petty trader.

Things were hard and she used to sell provisions, pure water, plantain.
After school, I used to sell things with her. I grew up in a house where education was important.
We believed education was our escape route from the way we were living.
When my mates were playing, I would watch them from the window but I could
not join them because I either had to study or work with my grandmother.

“I have sold pure water, pushed wheelbarrow in a popular market in Port-Harcourt.
I have done many things. But deep within me, I knew something great would happen to me.”

Known to be a regular feature at events
organised by the government, he said that it was because of the songs he sings.

The singer said that the songs he sings most times determine the kind of gigs he is invited to perform at.

When he was asked to clarify issues concerning the house that was rumoured he bought for his wife, the Idol winner said there was no air to clear.
“Whether I bought it or I rented it, as far as I am living in the house, it does not increase the money in my account. It doesn’t change anything.”
